STAR Answer Builder
Tell the story the way it comes to you. The builder sorts it into Situation, Task, Action and Result, flags what's missing, and gives you a version you can say out loud.
How it works
- 1
Pick or type the interview question.
- 2
Write what happened in plain language — don't worry about structure.
- 3
Review the STAR breakdown, fill any gaps it flags, then practise the spoken version.
What recruiters look for
Spend most of your time on Action
Situation and Task set the scene. Action is where the interviewer learns how you work. Aim for roughly 60% of your answer there.
Say “I”, not “we”
Team work matters, but the interviewer is assessing you. Be specific about your part.
End with a result — and what you learned
If the outcome wasn't great, say so and explain what you'd do differently. That's often a stronger answer.
Questions
How long should a STAR answer be?+
Around 90 seconds to two minutes when spoken. Long enough for detail, short enough to leave room for follow-up questions.
How many STAR stories should I prepare?+
Five to eight versatile stories cover most behavioral interviews: a conflict, a failure, a leadership moment, a tight deadline, a difficult stakeholder, and a result you're proud of.
